Chiltern Open Air Museum is a charity that rescues threatened historic buildings, which would otherwise be demolished, and rebuilds and preserves them in a traditional Chilterns landscape.
The Museum’s collection focuses on vernacular buildings – the past houses and workplaces of ordinary people that are gradually disappearing from the landscape. We have 38 buildings on display covering periods from the Iron Age to the mid-twentieth century.
Accessibility

The main paths are of a gravelled surface which some visitors may struggle walking on. If this surface makes access difficult, we recommend walking on grassy areas where possible.

Some of the buildings have upstairs access, though the staircases are steep with shallow steps and may be difficult to climb.

There is no external lighting on the site.
Wheelchair & Mobility Scooter access

Mobility scooters are welcome on site.

The Museum has a couple of off-road wheelchairs and mobility scooters available to borrow. However, if you wish to make use of these, please inform VP Events before you attend so we can ensure they are booked out by the museum.

The Museum has ramps into the prefab, Henton Mission Room, WWI Nissen Hut and Borehamwood Cattle Byre.

The Museum's compact gravel paths are not ideal for wheelchairs and some paths can become very muddy in bad weather.

The Woodland Walk is not suitable for wheelchairs.

There are several accessible toilets available - the doorway to the accessible toilet is set at 780mm.
Dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome and are allowed on site.

Please keep dogs on a short lead as there is a working farm with animals on the site.
